Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy
Jessie, Woody and Buzz

We’ve been trying to take our minds off this horrible weather by talking about what we’re each looking forward to later on this year…the kids are excited about various things, from our camping trip to Dartmouth (not till it’s MUCH warmer mind) to getting their own bedrooms when the House Project is completed (haven’t quite broken it to them that it’ll be next year rather than this…)

The one thing that’s causing the most excitement, for my lovely girl especially, is our trip to see Disney on Ice presents World of Fantasy. This show, which promises to be absolutely spectacular, is coming to Cardiff in April, as the last stop on a tour of the UK which takes in Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow and London on the way. We’ve never been to a live Disney show before, or a show on ice for that matter, and it’s fair to say we’re pretty excited about both!

The show itself is based around an adventurous journey by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, who turn to Goofy and Donald Duck for some roadside assistance when their car breaks down…I don’t think I’ll be giving too much away if I tell you that this particular ‘A’ team did not manage to get the car moving again without some assistance from the coolest of the Disney Cars!

As well as those Cars, the worlds of The Little Mermaid, Toy Story 3 and my girl’s favourite, Tinkerbell are all interwoven into the show – meaning that there’s something for Disney fans of all ages. Creating sets for all these very different worlds can be no mean feat – and probably explains why the show needs no less than thirteen trucks to get it from place to place!

It’s fair to say we’re really looking forward to our first Disney show…if it sounds like fun to you, why not visit the Disney on Ice website, where you can find out more about the show and book tickets for any of the UK venues.

**Disclaimer – We have been kindly invited to ‘Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy’ by Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the crew**

Silly Kings at Cardiff Castle by the National Theatre Wales

You may remember I wrote a post a while back telling you how much we were looking forward to our trip to see On Silly Kings at Cardiff Castle, by the National Theatre Wales – well, today was the day! We headed off to Cardiff Castle for the 2pm performance, arriving with just enough time to pick up snacks for the kids – popcorn and coconut ice, and organic mulled wine for the grownups – there’s also artisan beer, Fairtrade hot chocolate, and cold drinks available, and for the very hungry – King Herbert’s Extra Special Hot Dog! The food and drink was provided by Milgi’s, an award winning independent restaurant – it’s great to see home grown local outfits getting the opportunity to cater events like this.

Armed with our snacks, we ventured into the Spiegeltent and immediately realised we’d put too many clothes on, thinking it would be drafty like a Big Top – it wasn’t, it was toasty! The stage area takes up most of the middle, meaning that the whole audience is close to the action, and the seating is a mixture of hay bales, wooden benches and diner-style booths – we settled ourselves on some benches and awaited the action, while having fun with the activities in the programme.

The story starts by introducing us to the silliest of silly kings, King Herbert XII, his daughter Princess Fishy and her suitor Derek, and their courtiers. It’s fair to say that King Herbert is very silly indeed, much to the despair of those around him, especially when they hear that Derek’s father King Rupert is intending to pay a state visit…will they be able to persuade him to be sensible, just long enough to get the wedding sorted?

The tale unfolds with help from six more of Terry Jones’ Fairy Tales, each one woven into the fabric of the story, yet a showpiece if its own; with laughs aplenty for all, and a few sneaky life lessons in there too – I shall most definitely be mentioning the fate of The Beast with a Thousand Teeth when my kids plead for just one more cake. And though I have never seen any Monty Python (I know, I should probably sort that out at some point) I am reliably informed that the show was full of highly amusing Pythonesque references. Don’t let this put you off – I didn’t find it any less funny or absorbing for not picking up on any of them!

If you’re looking for a lovely family treat this Christmas, that is on a more thoughtful and less garish scale than the usual panto fare, I can highly recommend booking a trip to see Silly Kings at Cardiff Castle. It’s on at 2pm and 7pm, most days between now and 4th January – you can reserve your tickets here.

On Lazy Jacks – Review

**Disclosure – I received these tops to review free of charge, but Lazy Jacks did not tell me what to write, or ask me to mention anything specific. As always, I write as I find**

I’ll come right out with it – you’ve probably already spotted from photos on the blog that I’m a big fan of Lazy Jacks clothes, so I was absolutely over the moon when I was asked to review some items from their Autumn/Winter 2013 children’s range. Of course, I’m a teensy disappointed that once I hit ‘publish’,  several thousand* LearnerMother readers will be in on the secret too, but on the bright side, that practically makes me a fashion commentator, right? *preens, awaits the call from Anna W*

Well, she’s quite busy, you know. And there’s a time difference, she’s probably asleep. So while I wait for the call that will surely come, how about I tell you a bit more about this small, independent brand.

Based in Devon,  Lazy Jacks is a family firm which started out back in 2002 with just one design. Though the range has grown over the years, the quality has not been compromised – I can vouch for this as a longtime customer. Eleven years later, the Lazy Jacks catalogue includes brilliant quality hoodies, sweats, tees and fleeces for adults and children – and not only do they look great, but they last the distance. I know, when I buy my kids Lazy Jacks tops, that they’ll get a couple of years of abuse out of them (I buy big) and they’ll still be hand-on-able to my sisters’ kids.

Here’s a few pictures of the kids putting the tops through their paces at Ogmore Beach today. As you can see the tops are great for this time of year – warm and breathable, but also they look brilliant – the colours are strong and deep, and the Lazy Jacks branding is distinctive without being overwhelming. You can see a few more shots of the clothes in action on a colder and blustery day here, and I’ve also requested some catalogue images which I’ve put at the bottom of the post, so you can see the tops more clearly.

I already know that Lazy Jacks clothes wash well, even on repeated hot cycles. Why do I know it? Because here’s a picture of an older Lazy Jacks, looking, well, pretty normal after a day’s wear on my littlest.

After a couple of years of this sort of treatment, I have to say it still looks pretty good after washing. Obviously, having only had the new tops for a couple of weeks, they’ve only gone in the machine about 83 times so far (please tell me it’s not just my kids???) so I can’t give you a long term report; but early signs are that they’re as hard wearing as previous seasons’ offerings.

All in all, I’d say that Lazy Jacks clothes are well worth the price tag. These tops all retail at around the £30 mark, which to be honest is more than I spend on any other item of kids clothing. But because I know I will get two full years wear out of them and still be able to pass down, I think it’s well worth paying that bit more than for ‘high street hoodies’ which will be fraying at the edges after a few hot washes.

So, where can you get them? Lazy Jacks are available in independent shops throughout Devon and beyond, though if you’re not lucky enough to live in the South West your best bet is probably to order from their online shop at www.lazyjacks.co.uk. Service is good, delivery is fast and returns/exchanges are no fuss. If you’re a fan of high quality, practical clothing that looks great, I’d definitely recommend you give Lazy Jacks a try – and not just for your kids!

*maybe not  several thousand. Though my stats have gone up a bit lately, so possibly, say, five?
